Asselby - Aberford 48

National Grid identified a need to reinforce the National Gas Transmission network.

In order to meet this requirement a new 1220mm NB fully welded buried steel pipeline is to be installed between Asselby and Pannal. This new pipeline will interconnect two pipelines currently under construction Ganstead to Asselby and Pannal to Nether Kellet.

The termination points of the pipeline will be to two existing National Grid Above Ground Installations (AGIs) called Asselby and Pannal, with a 62km pipeline linking the sites. 

The works also comprises of the following:-

  • Construction of a new Pig Trap installation at Asselby AGI and 2 tie ins to existing.
  • Construction of a new Pig Trap installation at Pannal AGI and a tie ins to existing.

The offtake at Asselby consists of:

  • Tie in removal of existing 48” Dome end and tie in to existing above ground 48” single valve
  • Provision for 48” Pig Trap Facility.
  • Remote/Local manually operated isolating valve
  • Insulating joint

The reception facility at Pannel consists of:

  • Tie in removal of existing 48” Dome end and tie in to Dome end
  • Provision for 48” pig trap facility.
  • Local manually operated isolating valve
  • Insulating joint

The construction phase of the project was split into two sections:

  • Asselby to Aberford
  • Aberford to Pannel

Aberford to Pannel pipeline was constructed by Murphy pipelines and Asselby to Aberford and Asselby AGI was constructed by Laing O’Rourke.

QEM Services worked with Laing O’Rourke for the construction phase of the project.  The QEM Services role was to provide QA and Engineering services. 

The specific roles were:

  • QA Management
  • Method Statements
  • Risk Assessments
  • QA audits
  • Management of the Hydro-static testing
  • Engineering support during construction
  • RE18 documentation for commissioning
  • Handover documentation package
